MAL BROWN Run Down + Box Score

Here is a quick synoposis of what stood out at PC's Mal Brown scrimmage on Saturday at Alumni Hall.
First off, the crowd was surprisingly strong and everyone was impressed with PC's new Fitness Center addition. It's a beautiful new space.
On the floor, the team was clearly disjointed and the absence of injured point guards Sharaud Curry (foot, out another 3-4 weeks) and Marshon Brooks (ankle, back this week) was clear. Tim Welsh said his focus is more on the man-2-man defense that the team is playing and not on a smooth, flowing offense but with only 8 assists on 22 field goals there was too much one-on-one and not enough production in the halfcourt.
Specifically, Brian McKenzie shot the ball well and is clearly a factor offensively. He teammed with Weyinmi Efejuku for 19 of their team's 30 points. Efejuku ran a lot of point guard and showed he can do the job, especially powering past his man off the dribble.
Defensively, the shining star may just be freshman Alex Kellogg, who frustrated Geoff McDermott all day. He's strong, has good feet and knows what to do man-to-man. A lack of any aggression offensively is his downfall right now. The other freshmna, Jamine Peterson, excited the fans with his game-winning slam dunk and aggression close to the hoop (he tries to jam everything) and he clearly can be a factor this year. He should take 50 extra free throws before and after every practice, however. He draws fouls every time he touches the ball and has major problems knocking the shot down.
On the negative, the Friars have problems scoring out of the post. Big problems. The guard-oriented team doesn't feed the post enough and McDermott, Jon Kale, Randall Hanke and Ray Hall aren't even close to Herbert Hill once they touch the ball. This has to be a major concern right now.
Defensively, the team did a good job stopping ball penetration but cleaning up the defensive boards was a bit of an issue.
The Friars play a public exhibition game this Friday at the Ryan Center against Concordia College of Canada.
