There had to be smiles in the Wannamoisett clubhouse Monday as the golf-loving members looked at the leaderboard for the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston and noted that the top eight -- yes, eight -- finishers all had played in the Northeast Amateur.
Before turning pro, Webb Simpson, Chez Reavie, Jason Day, Luke Donald, Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk, Bo Van Pelt and Hunter Mahan all played in the prestigious amateur tournament at Wannamoisett.
Of that group, only Donald won the Northeast Amateur, and he did it twice.
Simpson won the Deutsche Bank -- and $1,440,000 -- by beating Reavie on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff.
That should serve as reminder to local golf fans that, before seeing the top players as pros at TPC Boston each September, they can see the future stars of the PGA Tour at the Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett every June.
