The URI basketball team will begin its season without forward Ben Eaves.

The wrist injury he suffered in practice last week is serious enough to keep him out for at least four weeks. The transfer from Connecticut, who is listed as a senior but who could have another year of eligibility, had been expected to be one of the first players off the bench for the Rams. He will miss at least the first five regular-season games. He averaged 3.4 points and 1.6 rebounds last season.

Also, freshman guard Lisandro Ruiz Moreno still is awaiting word from the NCAA on his status. The NCAA is looking into competition that Ruiz Moreno took part in in his native Argentina.

Freshman wing Nikola Malesevic, who missed the preseason opener with a sprained ankle, is ready to play tonight when the Rams host Rhode Island College.

It is hard to remember the last time a transfer performed well for the Rams like Eaves
