BARRINGTON - Michael Carter-Williams, a 6-5 guard now in his junior year at St. Andrews in Barrington, has given a verbal commitment to play at Syracuse in the fall of 2011.
Carter-Williams picked Syracuse over Providence, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Villanova and Miami, according to St. Andrews coach Mike Hart.

"Syracuse wound up being the perfect fit for Michael athletically and academically," Hart said. "Our whole team went up there in August and Michael fell in love with Syracuse."

Carter-Williams has expressed a desire to study communications. SU has one of the strongest programs in the country in the field. Hart said Carter-Williams, who is from Hamilton, Mass., has grown nearly two inches in the last year and expanded his game as well. He averaged 13 points and 6 rebounds as a sophomore last year.

"His best days are ahead of him," said Hart. "He came here as a scoring guard but I think he'll end up as a point guard in college. He'll play both guard spots for us this year."

The decision is a loss for Providence. Keno Davis and his staff recruited Carter-Williams all summer and into the fall as well. Coaches from PC, Notre Dame, Virginia and other schools all came to St. Andrews this fall to watch Carter-Williams play pickup ball with his Saints teammates. Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins was among the visitors and he ended up winning this recruiting battle.

Carter-Williams is the latest in a long line of St. Andrews players heading for big-time colleges. He joins Tony Robertson (UConn), Demetris Nichols (Syracuse), Jonathan Kale (PC) and Rakim Sanders (Boston College) as the headliners in the program's successful recent history.

How does one state that they are going to play "X" at one school when they are a junior? Aren't most kids still applying to colleges as seniors?

Does this kid have the grades and boards to get into one of the nation's premier communications programs? Doesn't he have to be accepted first?

Yes, he does need the grades Observer. But if he can shoot the ball, he'll get accepted. Most of the folks who can't get into Newhouse go the Visual and Performing Arts route and hope to get some work at the myriad TV and radio stations on campus. I was there in 1983 when Pearl Washington announced on live TV that he was going to Syracuse for that great communications school they have. Only you could barely understand a word he said...lol. We were all sitting in a dorm lounge watching it and after he finished a very large, very black, future NFL football player looked aorund and went, "That is one dumb kid." But Pearl could shoot. And that's all we cared about which is why SU goes to the Tourney and PC goes to the NIT.

The practice of top recruits verbally committing to accept a scholarship when they finally graduate from high school is more than a bit bizarre.
As many fans know, kids can commit any time they want but there is a chance he never attends the school. A kid's grades may falter, a coach could leave the school of choice, a school could back off a recruit over time.
That said, Syracuse clearly wants Mike Carter-Williams and he wants them. He is a fine student and will use his next two years at St. Andrew's to prepare for the challenge of playing at a big-time program. Good luck to him.

I hope that you still have communications program to fall back on...
