They may only be high school sophomores - barely 16 years old - but Providence's Ricky Ledo and South Kingstown's Alex Murphy are being hard-pressed to pick from a wide array of college basketball scholarship offers.
Ledo, a 6-4 shooting guard, has just transferred from Hendricken to St. Andrews and the college recruiters have been flocking to Barrington over the last two weeks. St. Andrews coach Mike Hart says he has four players seeing Division One interest and coaches from Providence College, URI, Boston College, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Kansas, Longwood, Villanova and Sacred Heart have all been in to see pick-up games. Senior center Youri Dascy and juniors Mike Carter-Williams and Mike Laplante of Woonsocket join Ledo as the targets for recruiters.
Murphy, who is now 6-8, played with Ledo all summer on the Expressions AAU team. The team fared well enough that coaches from around the country became interested in both Rhode Islanders. On Sunday between 25 and 30 schools saw Murphy and his teammates at St. Mark's School in Southborough, Mass., play pickup. PC's Keno Davis and URI's Jim Baron were among the lot. Murphy is hearing from virtually every major power in the country, including Arizona, Michigan, Notre Dame, Kansas, Florida, Indiana, Wake Forest, Boston College, Connecticut, Stanford, Harvard, UCLA, Duke, North Carolina, Georgetown and UMass.
