PC recruit Joseph Young far from done deal

The Friars received a verbal commitment from Houston, Tex., guard Joseph Young earlier this week but this one may get a bit messy.

Young's father, Michael Young, is an all-time great player at the University of Houston. He was a first round draft pick of the Celtics in 1984. He's also a member of the U of H basketball coaching staff, working under ex-URI coach Tom Penders.

Michael Young would not return calls from The Journal earlier this week and now it is clear why. Michael Young was quoted in the Houston Chronicle today as saying he's ``ashamed" that his sharp-shooting son does not want to enroll at Houston.
"I'm really ashamed," Young said. "I'm really ashamed for me to be a basketball coach here, and my son is a good basketball player, and he's not coming here."
Here is the piece on the Youngs.

What does this mean for the Friars? Michael Young and his son were at PC over Labor Day weekend and he's seen what the school wants to offer. His son wants to leave home and play at PC. Now, anyways. The signing period isn't until November and expect Houston to keep recruiting Joseph Young very hard.

Keno Davis, BTW, was at St. Andrew's School is Barrington this afternoon. The Friars are trying to recruit junior guard Mike Carter-Williams and sophomore wing Ricky Ledo. The only other coach in the gym? URI's Jim Baron. The Rams are also recruiting those two, as well as junior wing Michael LaPlante of Woonsocket.
