Good news for Friar fans. Michael Young is now insisting that his son, Joseph, will sign with Providence College in November.
"Joseph is a Friar," said Michael Young. "He's happy about it and me and my wife are excited about it."
Joseph Young verbally committed to PC last week after he and his father took a trip to Rhode Island over Labor Day weekend. But soon after that news broke, Michael Young showed his colors to his alma mater, the University of Houston. Young was a star member of the Cougars' historic Phi Slama Jama teams and played in the Final Four in 1982-84. Now he's the program's strength and conditioning coach.
Michael Young was quoted in the Houston Chronicle saying ""Do I want my son to play here? Man, do I want him to play here. My heart is really, really broken right now. I'm trying to get this decision turned. There's still time. I'm trying to get him to have a change of mind and really look at the whole situation.
"I'm really ashamed," Young added. "I'm really ashamed for me to be a basketball coach here, and my son is a good basketball player, and he's not coming here."
In a conversation on Thursday, Young was singing a different tune. "Things came out down here and I had to put the fire out," he said. "I'm sure fans at Providence weren't really sure what was being said. But now I am happy Joseph is a Friar."
Joseph Young is a 6-1 shooting guard with deep range. He helped lead Yates High to the Texas 4A state title and was recruited by Houston and several Big 12 schools. However, he was intrigued with the idea of leaving the state for the bright lights of the Big East.
"We had some options for Joseph but I have five kids and every kid is different," said Michael Young. "Joseph is self-motivated. I felt comfortable with his desire in going away and playing at a great school like Providence."
Young will sign with PC in November and can enroll next September. PC is also expected to sign 6-4 guard Gerard Coleman and 6-6 forward Ron Giplaye in the class of 2010.
Kevin,
Thanks for the updates. I feel like the amount of off season information available is significantly more than in years past. Is that a product of the internet age or is Keno a little more accessible than some of his predecessors?
with a young roster, any chance of a red shirt among the freshman? I don't know how Batts or Still could b/c of the lack of depth that would leave up front (with only Dixon and Permenter being able to fill the 4-5 spots) unless Kyle Wright can play bigger than his size on d.
Thanks!

This Michael Young looks like a very good sign-
I think PC had an excellent recruiting year for 2010. I sort of hoped that they would get a forward that could shoot from the outside- but this may work out-

Um, JMC ... Michael Young is the father while Joseph Young is the son and potential Friar. Typical PC fan ... you know nothing about your own team. On the bandwagon for success ... off the bandwagon during failure. If you hung around long enough, you'd actually get to know the team.
