Poor Coach Cal

Poor John Calipari.

Well, not literally. Coach Cal will, after all, be paid $31.65 million -- plus, ahem, incentives (as if $31.65 million isn't incentive enough) -- over the next eight years at the University of Kentucky, which lured him away from Memphis.

But, wow, talk about unlucky.

Talk about unfortunate coincidence.

The guy takes two programs to the Final Four -- UMass in 1996 and Memphis in 2008 -- and then has both appearances vacated by the NCAA.

What a tough break, what a shame, considering that coach Cal is innocent, and all. Clearly blameless. No NCAA penalties coming his way. Nope, just those huge bucks from the hoops-crazed Wildcats, desperate to once again be No. 1, not just nationally, but in the Commonwealth itself, where Rick "Table for Two" Pitino's Louisville Cardinals reign supreme.

Clearly, the expectation at UK is that coach Cal will take the 'Cats to the Final Four. The question, of course, is whether that appearance would remain on the record books, or be stricken, like those of the Minutemen and the Tigers.

Perhaps the third time will be the charm for coach Cal, that poor, unlucky, unfortunate, innocent victim of circumstances clearly beyond his control, bastion of integrity, a coach beyond reproach who just happened to have his best teams run afoul of those petty NCAA regulations.
