A big shout out to South Kingstown's Erik Murphy for his selection to the 2009 Parade Magazine All-American basketball team. Murphy, a 6-10 forward bound for the University of Florida in the fall, is the first Rhode Island boy to ever to make the team.
The only other player with Rhode Island ties (that I can recall) to the Parade team is Demetris Nichols in 2003. Nichols starred for St. Andrews of Barrington. He is a Boston native.
Murphy was selected to the Parade fourth-team All-American squad. The All-American selections were announced in this week's edition of Parade which appears in Sunday's (April 5) edition of the Providence Journal. This season Murphy led St. Mark's School in Massachusetts to its third New England Prep School Conference Class C title in the past four years.
The only other New England player to be included on the list of 40 Parade players was Boston's Alex Oriakhi, a 6-8 forward who plays at Tilton (NH) Academy and is headed to the University of Connecticut.
