Sanity in the midst of March Madness . . .
Brigham Young has won three straight Mountain West Conference regular season titles. With this afternoon's 79-66 defeat at the hands of Texas A&M, the Cougars now have lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament seven straight times.
Not exactly the way for the Mountain West to earn any respect nationally.
This was the second straight year that A&M beat BYU in the tourney opener. The Aggies also won last year in Anaheim, 67-62. In '07, it was Xavier that sent the Cougars home early, 79-77.
BYU also made opening round exits in 2004 (Syracuse), 2003 (UConn), 2001 (Cincinnati) and 1995 (Tulane.)
It's results like these that the Selection Committee ought to consider, rather than relying on contrived calculations such as the infamous Ratings Performance Index, which is based on arbitrary numerical valuations.
You are what your record says you are and BYU's record says the Mountain West isn't very good.
