SOUTH KINGSTOWN -- The URI Rams beat Dayton 93-91 on a buzzer-beater layup from Marquis Jones in overtime, sending URI's fans onto the court and bolstering the Rams' tournament resume.
The Rams (21-8, 10-4) were in control for much of the game, riding a frenetic pace to a 52-44 lead at the half. But Dayton (23-5, 9-4) came out strong in the second period, and slowed the game down with deliberate, methodical possessions. They clogged the URI passing lanes, and forced the Rams into eight turnovers in the second half.
URI led by two with less than a minute remaining, but Jimmy Baron missed a short jumper that could have sealed the game, and Dayton's London Warren responded with a driving layup that tied the game at 78.
The Rams struggled in the overtime period, until Baron picked up a loose ball and drilled a three-pointer that game the Rams an 89-88 lead. After a Dayton three-pointer tied the game at 91, Jones dribbled down the lane as time expired and dropped in a reverse layup for the win.
