"When we came back from West Virginia, I told them we needed 95. And they gave me 103," said Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, speaking after today's 103-84 triumph in Providence. It was the most points that his team has scored since it put up 103 in a preseason exhibition game against Briar Cliff University.
Brey's team has now won three of four games since suffering through a seven-game losing streak. They're 15-11 overall and 6-8 in the Big East.
"It was a very big win for us," Brey said. "I'm proud of our group. This group has taken a lot of punches and kept on fighting."
Brey said he liked the matchup with Providence coming in because the Friars like to play zone defense, and his shooters thrive when they are given space. They had lots of space for much of the first half.
"Our perimeter guys, when they see zone, they take a little bit of a deep breath," Brey said.
Notre Dame's coach also singled out junior Jonathan Peoples for praise. Peoples came in off the bench and ran the point for most of the game for the Irish, finishing with 14 points and nine assists -- both season highs.
