The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are putting on a 3-point shooting clinic this afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, as they have nailed 11 of 18 from long distance (61 percent) and lead the PC Friars by a 49-37 halftime score. PC has trailed ever since Notre Dame opened the scoring with -- appropriately enough -- a 3-pointer by Ryan Ayers just 20 seconds into the action.
Notre Dame's star forward, Luke Harangody, has been a nonfactor. He has scored just one point -- on a foul shot with less than a minute left in the half -- and sat on the bench for most of the half, due in part to his two personal fouls.
But Harangody has not been missed, because both Ayers and Kyle McAlarney have been launching up shot after open shot from behind the arc. Ayers has 18 points -- all on 3-pointers -- on 6-of-9 shooting. McAlarney has another 17, and is 4 of 6 from behind the arc.
Notre Dame has led by as many as 17 points; PC cut into that lead by ending the half on an 8-3 run.
The Friars are shooting just 36 percent, and are 2 of 11 on 3-point shots. Sharaud Curry leads the team with 16 points; he has hit eight of eight foul shots. Marshon Brooks has put up four shots -- all 3-pointers -- and he has missed them all.
Like the song goes when will they ever learn? They seem to be playing a little D in the second half. This aspect of their game must change if they are going to be a team to be reckoned with. It is that simplistic and that difficult to attain. It is extremely unfortunate because they are good players.
