It has been six years since the Ryan Center opened, but URI officials obviously have not forgotten the man most responsible for making the facility a reality.
Ceremonies will be held today when the Rams play their 100th game in the building, a 2:30 contest against Akron. The ceremonies will be simple, reported Thor Bjorn, the URI athletic director. A game ball will be presented to former governor Lincoln Almond.
It was Almond who brought the idea, proposed by then URI-coach Al Skinner, to build a new home for Rhody basketball. Skinner and then URI-AD Ron Petro did much of the work, but it was Almond, a URI grad and regular at Rhody games, who provided the political clout to make it become a reality.
The first game of the doubleheader just finished. Albany took control late to defeat the URI women, 69-59.
