In a game that had enough twists and turns for a month's worth of competition, URI beat La Salle 98-88 in overtime today at the Ryan Center.
URI led by 11, 80-69, with 2:40 left in regulation. La Salle scored the game's last 11 points to tie it and force overtime. The Explorers then won the tap and got a hoop from Rodney Green to take the lead at the start of overtime,
Delroy James came right back with a 3-pointer from the left corner to put Rhode Island back on top.
That started a run of six straight points for the Rams. URI led 90-86 when James had another 3-pointer with 1:32 left in the extra session and URI had its third straight victory, second in overtime, although this one was easier. They only had to go one overtime, while they needed two overtimes to win at George Washington a week ago.
``This,'' said Rhody coach Jim Baron in a bit of an understatement, ``is a terrific win for us.''
``It was a great team win for Rhode Island,'' agreed La Salle coach John Giannini, whose team had carried a three-game winning streak into the Ryan Center. ``They had many, many contributions on their side and we had many on our side, too.''
The list of players who had special days was long.
James and Lamonte Ulmer both set career highs in scoring with 22 and 19 points, respectively. Marquis Jones had 13 points and a career high nine assists. Ulmer had a career high five steals. Kahiem Seawright had 25 points, one of his career high, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots.
They won despite having their leading scorer, Jimmy Baron, go 2-for-12 from the field and not make a shot in the game's final 38:22.
URI had five players in double figures. La Salle had six, led by Rodney Green with 22.
The Rams are 15-7, 4-3. La Salle drops to 12-8, 3-3. URI now has played six overtime periods in its seven A-10 contests.
