STORRS, Conn. - On to number one.
The UConn Huskies have just blown out the Providence Friars, 94-61, in a game marked by some true physical domination in the second half.
The Huskies led by just 38-34 at the half but blew the Friars out in the second half thanks to a suffocating defense led by All-American big man Hasheem Thabeet. The 7-3 center recorded a triple-double, scoring 15 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and, most importantly, blocking a 10 shots.
Each of Thabeet's blocks added to PC's frustration level which blew over twice as both Jonathan Kale and Geoff McDermott were whistled for technical fouls. Randall Hanke led the Friars with 16 points and Kale added 12.
``UConn was a lot more physical than we weer and we got a little rattled by some plays in the second half,'' said PC coach Keno Davis. ``They knocked down some shots on us and it got out of hand quickly.''
UConn opened the second half with an 11-0 run that broke the game open. The Friars missed four jump shots and had a Marshon Brooks floater blocked by Thabeet before they scored a bucket in the half. UConn kept rolling with strong, physical defense that drew the ire of the Friars and coach Keno Davis who looked at the officials at the 10:47 mark and pointed out that PC had been called for six fouls and UConn had zero.
With No. 1 Duke and No. 3 Pittsburgh both losing this week, UConn is the heavy favorite to vault into the top spot in the polls on Monday. The Huskies improved to 20-1, 9-1 Big East. PC falls to 14-7 and 6-3.
I agree with your statement earlier that Vegas was way off by making Uconn a 13 - 14 point favorite. They aren't aware of the situation like we are. They probably don't know that we swept Uconn last year and have won 4 straight in Conn. Keep up the good work.
