They almost beat Duke. They almost beat PC. And tonight, they almost beat Oklahoma State. But the URI Rams continue to fall short in close games against big-conference foes, as tonight they fell to the Cowboys, 86-82, in the O'Reilly All-Conference Classic in Oklahoma City.
URI had a six-point halftime lead, but saw it disappear quickly in the second half. The Rams kept close to the Cowboys, and tied the game up with less than five minutes remaining, but it was Oklahoma State that made the shots that counted down the stretch.
James Anderson had 33 points to lead Oklahoma State, and Byron Eaton added 22. Kahiem Seawright led URI with 17 points. Marquis Jones, who had 15 points in the first half, did not score in the second. Jimmy Baron, who was held to 4 points on 2-of-5 shooting in the first half, ended up with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting.
For the Atlantic 10, URI's loss meant a return to earth a week after conference teams pulled off three wins (Temple over Tennessee, UMass over Kansas and Xavier over Cincinnati) on national television. Today A-10 teams were on national TV three times once again, but they went 0-3, with Temple losing to Kansas, Xavier falling hard to Duke, and the Rams falling short in Oklahoma.
