pitino1102.jpgLouisville coach Rick Pitino has apologized to fans following Sunday's upset loss to Western Kentucky, which dropped the Cardinals from number three to number 11 in the Associated Press poll.

In a soul-searching blog entry titled "Sorry fans you deserve better," Pitino called out virtually every Cardinal player who took the floor on Sunday. He indicated that his team lacked intensity in practices leading up to the Western Kentucky game (think practices will be intense now?) and summed up "I've had more disappointing losses but none more disappointing than this one."

Here's an excerpt:

Before victory is achieved, you earn it through practice. We had five practices to get ready for WKU. WKU, a dedicated group of young men who play with great purpose. Although we had only five practices, only one deserved victory. That's a shame. Was it the arrogance of mild success? Or the ugly side of ego coming into play? In the twelve step alcohol and drug program ego is described as edging God out. In sports, ego is edging greatness out.

This is a great article. You should relate it to PC though, it sounds like Rick Pitino is identifying the same problems PC has. He says "Or the ugly side of ego coming into play? In the twelve step alcohol and drug program ego is described as edging God out. In sports, ego is edging greatness out." That's the problem with PC: ego. The players have this sense about them like they are great. However, they haven't even come close to accomplishing anything. If they don't remove their egos this team is going nowhere. They need to realize that four years have gone by and the only senior that has improved is Kale. The other leveled off by sophmore year. Do they really want the legacy of never accomplishing anything? Why haven't these players improved at all? It is all because of their egos, so they don't care. In their heads, they think they are great. Maybe they should prove it. Maybe X should stop putting up the X after a pointless three (it's not so impressive when you missed 8 threes before that? Maybe we should stop calling him X until he actually earns a nickname? Maybe they should hustle on the press so it doesn't break down and result in layups? Maybe they should play some hard D rather than trying to outscore teams (which they clearly can't do with their three point shooting, maybe they'll get lucky with a good shooting night here and there and knock off a few good teams, but it won't get them far--and they'll lose to just as many bad teams)? Maybe they should act like they care about losing? Hey, just a thought.

It reminds me of the Mighty Ducks. At the beginning of D2 Gordon Bombay comes back and watches the team practice. Then he asks, "Haven't you guys been practicing in the offseason" and they respond "I knew we forgot something coach". That sums up the way this teams is playing.
