It took a while to get going, but once it did the URI basketball had more than enough to win its ninth game of the season tonight.
The Rams outscored Fairleigh Dickinson, 95-80, at the Rothman Center in what was not one of URI's better performances. Playing a team that is 1-10 on the season, URI had to work to the finish as the Knights, after being own more than 20, pulled within 10 with 3:50 left.
Rhode Island (9-4) made only one of its first 10 field-goal attempts. It trailed 22-21 with seven minutes left in the first half.
From there, the Rams made 11 of their last 12 shots in the half, helped by numerous steals off the press. URI had 10 steals in the first half and led 47-31 at the break. The two teams combined for 43 turnovers, 24 by FDU.
Keith Cothran led URI with 20 points. Sophomore Will Martell, playing his best game in a Rhody uniform had 18. Former URI guard Terence Grier had a career high 21 for FDU.
