PROVIDENCE - With 15.7 seconds on the clock and his team down by one, Geoff McDermott went to the free throw line and didn't feel too good.
A nervous McDermott made the first of two free throws to tie and then a second to put his PC basketball team ahead of state rival Rhode Island, 66-65.
Then it was Rhody's turn. The Rams got the ball to Jimmy Baron who dribbled the ball up the floor, came off a high screen with Weyinmi Efejuku all over him and missed a contested 12-footer. Kahiem Seawright was at the rim and missed a tip-in and the ball came out to URI's Marquis Jones with about four seconds left.
Jones tried to pass the ball instead of shoot and the ball was deflected by McDermott, ending what was a hard-fought, exciting ballgame before a sellout crowd of 12,600.
Baron and Seawright led the Rams with 18 points each but Baron scored just two in the second half, making one of seven shots.
Efejuku played superbly, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. His wing 3-pointer with 2:33 left was perhaps the biggest bucket of the game.
We'll have the complete game wrap-up with stories, columns, notes and pictures on projo.com in a few hours.
Great game for the Friars.
Marshon seems to be the new star on the team, however, kudos to Mc Dermott and Efejuko for coming through in the clutch.
