Two Rhode Islanders who've put themselves into position to earn Division One college basketball scholarships have struck pay dirt.
Exeter's Ben Crenca and West Warwick's Sam Martin have shined at Worcester Academy for the last two years and now they'll be headed to D-1 colleges in the fall of 2009. Crenca, a strong 6-10 center, has verbally committed to accept a scholarship at the University of Vermont. Martin, a 6-2 guard, has told the Yale University staff he'd like to attend the Ivy League school.
The commitments were first reported by newenglandrecruitingreport.com. That web site also ranks high school players in the region and has Crenca as the 19th best senior prospect in New England and Martin listed at 34.
On another recruiting note, it seems that first-year Brown coach Jesse Agel has struck pay dirt. Brown has apparently received a commitment from Tucker Halpern, a good-shooting 6-7 forward from Noble&Greenough School in Massachusetts.
