It's certainly good to have college basketball back up and running in the Ocean State.
URI is enjoying a 90-63 season-opening win over Florida Atlantic even though two of its best players struggled mightily.
Leading scorer Will Daniels managed just 7 points on 3-of-9 shooting. Kahiem Seawright was saddled with fouls all evening and managed 1 rebound and 4 points.
But these Rams are deep and talented. Jimmy Baron carried the weight with a career-high 30 points, including 5 threes. The junior guard is shooting the ball as sweetly as ever and getting points running and cutting to the basket as well. The team also flashed its aggressive defensive look where Keith Cothran and Lamonte Ulmer come off the bench and harrass opponents to no end. They sparked a D that caused 25 turnovers.
"Keith is so athletic," said young Baron. "His greatest strength is he gets in the passing lanes on defnese and makes steals."
Cothran and Baron had three steals apiece.
The Rams return to action this Wednesday when they travel to in-state rival Brown. The Bears will be confident after shredding Eastern Michigan this afternoon in a road opener. Brown faces Michigan in Ann Arbor Sunday before flying home and preparing for the Rams.
