Temple is going into the half with a 33-29 lead. The Owls scored the final 5 points of the half, all in the final 36 seconds, to take the lead.
The Friars fell behind out of the gate, 18-7, with Temple's star guard Dionte Christmas scoring seven points. The Atlantic 10's scoring king is an excellent deep shooter and also puts the ball on the floor smoothly.
After re-grouping, the Friars began to play well. A 16-5 run sparked by better ball movement and much better defense (zone variety) changed the tone of the game. The Friars tied the score at 23-23 on a Jeff Xavier runner in the lane but Christmas (13 points) drained a 25-foot 3-pointer to put Temple back ahead.
The final minute was a disaster for Providence. PC led 29-28 with a minute left but Chris Clark hit a deep 3-pointer with 36 seconds left. PC then held for one shot but the chance it got was a stinker with Geoff McDermott firing a fastball alley-oop pass that Greedy Peterson had no chance to corral. The ball slammed off the backboard and Temple got an easy run-out hoop by Mark Tyndale to carry a 5-point lead into the half.
