Without major college football (sorry Rhody, the CAA doesn't count), getting recruits on campus for the start of practice is a big deal for schools like URI and Providence College.
With that in mind, both schools are rolling out the red carpet for events that begin tonight and continue through the weekend.
URI is being extremely aggressive with a slew of recruits expected on campus tonight and tomorrow. The headliner is Erik Murphy, the South Kingstown resident who plays at St. Mark's in Massachusetts and is regarded as one of the top 50 juniors in the nation. Murphy is at URI but, sorry Ram fans, isn't really thinking about enrolling so close to his home. He's very friendly with Billy Baron, the son of the Ram HC, and is in town this weekend for an AAU tournament at CCRI in Warwick.
Murphy is looking at at least a dozen schools and is currently very high on Florida, Duke, N. Carolina, BC, Ohio State and Marquette. He hopes to cut his list to about five schools in the next month.
Also in Kingston is Murphy's current teammate at St. Mark's, Nate Lubick. He's a 6-7 forward and one of the top sophomores in the East. Other underclassmen expected to be on campus who URI is trying to recruit include sophomore Denzel Brito of Lawrence (Mass.) Academy, junior forward Jordan Williams of Torrington, CT; junior shooter Austin Carroll of Worcester Acad.; and junior forward Dartaye Ruffin of Stoneham, Mass.
Stevie Mejia, a point guard at Lawrence Acad., expected to sign with URI next month is also expected on campus. The other senior target is Genesis Maciel, a 6-8 forward at Worcester Acad.

At PC, the Friars are getting an official visit from Bilal Dixon, the New Jersey forward who has commited to Tim Welsh and is expected to sign next month. PC is also expecting Trinity Fields, a point guard from New York who likes the Friars a lot and could enroll next fall or in 2009.
The Friars will have as many as 6 scholarships to offer prep juniors and two are here this weekend. One is Darryl Cato-Bishop, a strong 6-3 guard who plays with Stevie Mejia at Lawrence Academy. The other is Mike Marra, a 6-4 shooter from Smithfield who is off to a flying start at Northfield-Mt. Hermon. Marra is a top target for the Friars but he's also hearing from the likes of Louisville, Syracuse and Florida.

We'll try to take attendance over the weekend and tell you just who did (and didn't) show up.

I appreciate all the articles lately, please keep them coming. I especially enjoy the information on recruiting and the progress of the current freshman class. Your blogs give up pure information the local message boards give us 90% BS.

Thanks
